Using the Periodical Databases at NIU Library

Select "Find Articles and more"

You will be asked to choose "I am on campus" or "I am off campus"
    If you are off campus, you will go to a directions page for getting access. Please read this
    carefully and follow directions.

Once you get to the "Databases by Subject" page, scan down the columns for disciplines that might fit with your search topic. 

An alternative method is to click on "list all databases" this will take you to an alphabetic listing of all subscription data bases. Read the description of each data base and select those that might have some relevance to your search.

You should consider the following databases as beginning points
Applied Science and Technology Abstracts Applied Science and Technology Abstracts (ASTA)--An index to more than 600 English language journals covering a spectrum of the applied sciences, including chemistry, computer science, engineering, geology, mathematics, physics, etc. Some Full Text.

ArticleFirst An index of articles from nearly 12,500 journals addressing all academic areas. Coverage is 1990 to the present. ArticleFirst is in First Search. Some Full Text.

Computer Science Index Computer Science Index--which supercedes the former Computer Literature Index--covers computer science at the highest scholarly and technical levels. Subjects areas include artificial intelligence, expert systems, system design, data structures, computer theory, computer systems and architecture, software engineering, human-computer interaction, new technologies, social and professional context, and much more.

Dissertation Abstracts Provides bibliographic citations, including abstracts, from all subject areas for doctoral dissertations and master's thesis completed at over 1,000 accredited colleges and universities worldwide. Northern Illinois University dissertations submitted since 1997 are available full-text. All other dissertations submitted since 1997 offer a twenty-four page preview.

EBSCO Publishing This database includes Academic Search Elite, which provides full text for over 1,250 journals, Business Source Elite, which provides full text for over 960 journals, Newspaper Source which provides selected full text articles from 143 U.S. and international newspapers, Health Source Plus, which provides full text for nearly 270 health periodicals, over 1,000 health pamphlets, and 23 health reference books, Advice for the Patient, which provides patient-oriented drug information in lay language and over 7,000 reports, in every-day language, describing symptoms, treatments, risks, and after-effects of a vast array of medical topics and conditions. ERIC (FirstSearch) Focuses on educational resources and research. Over 900,000 citations divided approximately in half between journal literature and references to conference papers, official reports, theses, etc. Coverage is 1966 to the present. Full Text.

Ingenta An extremely diverse collection of more than 27,000 journal titles. The database contains both full-text and abstracts. Tutorial

Library Literature and Information Science Provides citations to journal articles, theses, books, chapters and conference proceedings on libraries and librarianship. Some Full Text.

Net Library NetLibrary offers access to digitized books, including all of the titles produced by the Guttenberg Project. In addition, the University Libraries offers access to some 1,500 titles in business, computer science, and general reference. Notice that to check out books, you need to register at a computer, which is directly linked at the library to set up an individual account. With this individual ID and password, you may access the materials from off campus through any Internet service provider. Full Text.

New York Times (Historical) -- This database offers full-text and full-image articles for newspapers dating back to the 19th century. For most titles, the collection includes digital reproductions of every page from every issue--cover to cover--in downloadable PDF® files. Coverage spans 1851 to 2001.

PapersFirst Covers papers published in conferences, symposiums, workshops and meetings since 1993. PapersFirst is on FirstSearch. Some Full Text.

PsycInfo Compiled by the American Psychological Association, contains indexes, journal articles, chapters in books and entire books on psychology and related fields. Covering 1,300 journals in 27 languages, it also provides abstracts. Coverage is 1887 to the present. PsychInfo is on OVID. Some Full Text.

Wilson Select Plus Provides indexed and abstracted records with accompanying full text in periodicals for over 800 journals from H.W. Wilson General Science Abstracts, Humanities Abstracts, Reader's Guide Abstracts, and Wilson Business Abstracts. There are over 320,000 records. Dates covered are from 1994 to the present.
