Early Childhood Special Education

This specialization prepares students to obtain early childhood special education (ECSE) approval to work with children with disabilities from 3-5 years of age.  Students must hold or obtain certification in special education (Type 10) or early childhood (Type 04) in order to apply for the ECSE approval.*

To obtain ECSE approval:

COMD 403 or LTLA 403X, Language Development in Young Children (3); or
LTLA 537, Acquisition of Spoken and Written Language (3)
COMD 423, Articulatory and Phonological Disorders (3) 

The remaining coursework will be electives that are identified by the student and advisor.

* Students who wish to obtain a Type 10 or 04 certification as part of their program must complete coursework required for the type of certification desired.  This coursework will be identified through advisement.  In addition, review criteria and information for LBS-I (Special Education Type 10) or ECE (Type 04) certification in the catalog and web site.
