Middle School Endorsement

The Bachelor of Science in Education (B.S. Ed.) degree in elementary education qualifies students for an Illinois Elementary Teacher’s Certificate which enables them to teach in kindergarten through ninth grade. Students seeking an elementary teaching certificate who wish to teach in departmentalized grades five through eight must have a “middle grade” (commonly called middle school) endorsement on their certificates. An endorsement is a written notation entered upon the face of a teaching certificate designating additional specific subjects which an individual is qualified to teach.

Elementary education majors are encouraged to consider completing middle school endorsements to add to their marketability. Currently in the state of Illinois, there is a shortage of middle school teachers qualified to teach mathematics, science, and Spanish.

In order to be eligible for a middle school endorsement added to an elementary teacher’s certificate, students must do the following:

  1. The middle school teacher must complete 3 semester hours of TLCI 422, Middle School Organization and Instruction, focusing on middle school philosophy and curriculum and instructional methods

    AND

3 semester hours of EPS 419, The Middle School Child, focusing on developmental characteristics of early adolescents and the role of the middle school teacher in assessment, coordination, and referral of students to health and social services.
  2. Also required is 18 semester hours of credit in the subject matter area of the major teaching assignment (e.g., language arts, general science, mathematics, social science, music, and art). Please note that course work taken to fulfill general education requirements may also count toward subject matter areas.

When a teacher is assigned to deliver instruction in two areas (e.g., language arts and social science, or mathematics and science), the teacher must have 18 semester hours in one area and 9 semester hours of course work in the other instructional area.
