One Room School
The Milan Township District #83 Schoolhouse Activity
Sheet
- Tour of the Schoolhouse
o A tour will be led by a costumed member of the Blackwell Staff and
will include:
Showing the equipments that were used at the one-room school
Showing the school supplies that were used at the one-room school
Describing typical classroom activities in 1900
Describing typical recreational activities at the one-room school
o After the tour, children can draw a Venn Diagram showing the similarities
and differences between the one-room school and their own school.
- Scavenger Hunt
o Children will be given a list of clues to find various objects
in the school.
o The children will locate each item on the list and then point
out the items to the tour guide. The tour guide may then ask the
children questions about the items on the list.
o After they have successfully finished the scavenger hunt, children
will receive a small prize.
o Scavenger hunt example:
Clue: Students carried their lunches in these.
Answer: Lunch pails.
Question: Is this lunch pail similar to what you carry your lunch
to school in?

Draw a Picture
o Children can draw a picture of an item in the school using pen
and ink. This picture can be of an object that is:
Their favorite
The most interesting
The strangest
The most like an item in their school
o Children can then tell why they drew a picture of that item
o The tour guide can give more information about that item if the
children have any questions.
