Prairie School Oral History Project

Checklist of Materials

This is a checklist of materials you will need to complete an oral history and the papers you will submit to the Blackwell Museum once you have completed all aspects of the project.

The Demography Sheet

This demography sheet is very important, since, when filled out, it will contain all of the pertinent information about the oral history such as who did the interview, the history of the person being interviewed, and when and where the interview was conducted. All of this information is valuable to researchers.

Introductory Statement

This is the introductory statement used to begin the interview, which every recorded interview should have to ensure accuracy and completeness.

Gift Agreement

The interviewee should complete this gift agreement to ensure that the Blackwell Museum has permission to use the contents of the oral history. You may need to explain that the agreement form was prepared by a university attorney and that is why the language is unusual.

Interviews with Country School Students

Following are suggested questions to use when interviewing a person who attended a country school. The list, compiled by a number of people engaged in the oral history project, is far too lengthy for any one interview. It is expected that you will select the questions most relevant to your interests, drop the rest and possibly add new questions that you believe should be on the list.

Interviews with Country School Educators

Following are suggested questions to use when interviewing a person who taught in a one-room school or served as a supervisor, trustee, master teacher, superintendent, etc. The list of questions, compiled by a number of people engaged in the oral history project, is far too lengthy for any one interview. It is expected that you will select the questions most relevant to the interviewee*s job, drop the rest and possibly add new questions that you believe should be on the list.

Sample Transcript

This page is an example of how to prepare a transcript of your interview.

Sample Thank You Letter
