Gene Roth

Dr. Gene L. Roth is Professor of Adult and Higher Education and a NIU Distinguished Teaching Professor. His research interests include learning to learn, international adult education, workforce preparation and development, and humor and adult learning. Dr. Roth has been the principal investigator of over thirty externally funded research projects that have totaled over $1.5 million.
He has been a guest lecturer/consultant at the Shanghai Second Institute of Education, Shanghai, China; the University of Helsinki, Helsinki, Finland; the Korea Research Institute for Vocational Education and Training; Chung-Ang University, Seoul, Korea; Seoul National University, Seoul, Korea; Kyungnam University, Masan, Korea; and the National Petroleum Company of Kuwait. Additionally, he has presented papers and worked on funded projects in Greece, Sri Lanka, India, France, England, and Spain. He has directed study abroad programs in Finland, Estonia, Taiwan, South Korea, Malaysia, Singapore, China, Russia and the Netherlands. He was awarded an Honorary Professorship from the Shanghai Second Institute of Education, Shanghai, China. He received the NIU Outstanding International Educator Award in 2004.
His articles have appeared in The International Journal of Lifelong Learning, Training and Development Journa, The Journal of Vocational Education Research, The Journal of Industrial Teacher Education, and The Journal of Research on Computing in Education.
Dr. Roth recently completed ten years of service on the Board of the Academy of Human Resource Development (AHRD), including a term as President. He also has served on the Board of the Foundation of the AHRD as well as on the Management Board of the Human Resource Development International Journal, and the Editorial Board of the Asia Pacific Education Review.
