Richard Orem is Professor of Adult and Higher Education and Presidential Teaching Professor. He holds a joint appointment with the Department of Literacy Education where he is professor of literacy education and is an adjunct professor in the Department of Leadership, Educational Psychology, and Foundations. Orem's interest in language issues began as a high school exchange student and was further developed as a Peace Corps volunteer to Tunisia in 1970-72. Orem's primary work at NIU focuses on the preparation of teachers of English as a second language in bilingual programs. He currently directs a Title 3 National Professional Development Grant from the Department of Education entitled Project Success, the goals of which are to prepare mainstream classroom teachers in Illinois schools to work more effectively with the increasing numbers of English language learners entering these schools. He also teaches the adult ESL methods classes for educators who wish to work or are working with adult English language learners. He has traveled and lectured widely in the US and in South Korea, China, and Finland. Orem's most recent book is Teaching Adult English Language Learners published by Krieger Publishers in 2005. Orem has held leadership positions in TESOL, AAACE, Illinois TESOL/BE, and IACEA. He served as executive director of TESOL in 1989-90. Besides his teaching interest, his research interests include the influence of culture on adult second language learning and the development of language policy at the local, state, and federal levels.
