Northern Illinois University Counseling Association (NIUCA)

What is NIUCA? The Northern Illinois University Counseling Association (NIUCA) is a chapter of the Illinois Counseling Association, which is a state branch of the American Counseling Association. This group participates in volunteer, social, and informational meetings to build camaraderie and friendship, while also expanding the mind and understanding of students in the counseling program. It is open to all undergraduate, master's level, and doctoral students who wish to learn more about the field of professional counseling.


NIUCA Mission: To enhance human development throughout the life span and to promote the counseling profession within the northern Illinois region.


NIUCA meetings are held every other Wednesday at 3 p.m. in
Graham Hall Room 423 unless otherwise noted.
*First meeting for Fall 2014 is September 3rd.*

Past events include:

  • Grant writing workshops
  • Mandated reporting
  • Speakers on equine-assisted psychotherapy, ACA conference preparation, crisis counseling in Haiti
  • Practicum and internship question and answer sessions
  • Presentations on play therapy, substance abuse, adventure-based counseling

Social/Volunteer Events:

  • Participation in Challenge Day Events at participating high schools
  • Tailgating, bowling, and group dinners
  • Potluck gatherings for new student orientation
  • Weekly "Blackhawk" lunches
  • Volunteer work at the YMCA Children's Halloween Party
  • Dinner service at St. Leonard's Ministries
  • Holiday parties/festivities
  • Fundraising
  • End of the year celebration recognizing students' accomplishments
  • Participation in NIU's Dialogue on Diversity Program discussing racism, multiculturalism, and diversity
  • NIU Cares Day and Relay for Life

NIUCA is a great way for students to become a part of the NIU community and share with colleagues their ideas, knowledge, and philosophies about counseling.
