Adult and Higher Education Programs

Mission

The Department of Counseling, Adult and Higher Education’s mission is to promote high standards of professional education in an environment attentive to the needs of students, faculty, and the broader society it serves. In the Adult and Higher Education Program, students explore the historical, social, scholarly, and philosophical foundations of the field in their student-centered coursework, and experience theory-to-work applications of course content through professional work experiences, graduate assistantships, and internships. Adult and Higher Education students are partners in the learning process, and share a commitment to the best practices in the preparation of educators, leaders, and advocates in diverse areas of study.

Understanding the world, communities, and people is the thrust of the Department of Counseling, Adult and Higher Education. CAHE is a department that makes knowledge useful, prepares individuals for careers, and develops a commitment in students that has become the driving force they use to help people expand, unfold, and grow. CAHE is committed to the best practices in the preparation of educators, leaders, and advocates in the fields of counseling, adult education, and higher education. Students, faculty, and the community are attracted to our department because we are committed to understanding the past, advancing the present, and modeling for the future what graduate preparation should be for professionals involved with individuals in a global community. CAHE appreciates and celebrates both the practical applications and theoretical models in the field. Our faculty understands that there is a delicate balance between theory and practice that drives the dynamic academic learning environment throughout all of the programs in the department.
