You can register for courses upon admission to a degree program, or receipt of permission to enroll as a Student-At-Large from The Graduate School and your completion of the Student Information Sheet and the Course of Study Planning Checklist for the Media Specialist Certificate for the ETRA department. Following is a list of competency subject areas required by the state with courses to meet those requirements.
Media Certification requires 36-credit hours. Below is the list of required courses offered at NIU for students seeking a Type 10 Library Information Specialist (LIS) certificate.

- ETT 439 Developing Educational Software
- ETT 501 Pro-seminar in Instruction Technology (formerly offered as ETT 590 Pro-seminar)
- ETT 504 Cataloging and Classification
- ETT 508 Reference Theory and Practice
- ETT 510 Instructional Media and Technology
- ETT 511 Advanced Media Design (Message Design) or ETT 531 Visual Literacy
- ETR 520 Introduction to Educational Research (or a research/evaluation course) selected with the approval of the ETRA program advisor
- ETT 523 Media for Young Adults
- ETT 527 Library Materials for Children
- ETT 533 School Library Media Centers
- ETT 542 Information Access and Social Responsibilities for Library Information Specialists
- ETT 586 Internship or ETT 569 Practicum (NCATE requirement)
* By completing an additional 3-hour ETT course, students will have met the minimum 39-semester hour course requirements for a master degree in Instructional Technology
In addition to the required library information specialist course work and unless already taken as part of their teaching certificate, students pursuing Library Information Specialist Certification must also successfully complete:
- Library Information Specialist Test (formerly the Media test)
- Assessment of Professional Teaching (APT) Test
- Basic Skills Test
- A course in non-Western culture
- A course in exceptional education (TLSE 457 at NIU)
