The Department of Kinesiology and Physical Education is one of six departments in the College of Education and offers undergraduate programs leading to B.S. and B.S.Ed. degrees. The department also offers a comprehensive graduate program leading to an M.S.Ed. degree. There are currently 21 regular continuing faculty, 2 supportive professional staff, 25 temporary faculty, 35 graduate assistants, and approximately 85 full- and part-time graduate students and 400 undergraduate students. The administrative offices are located in Anderson Hall, where a majority of the classes are taught. Other teaching locations are Evans Field House, Gabel Hall, and Huskie Stadium.
The enrollment is small enough so faculty members know the students as individuals, yet large enough that a variety of classes and activities can be offered. Members of the faculty are experienced and well qualified in many specialized areas of the profession. Because of their expertise, undergraduates are well prepared for their careers upon graduation, and for pursuing advanced degrees. Many of our faculty members are recognized nationally through their research, publications, national offices, and convention presentations.
Our departmental advising system is a vital link in the educational process. An undergraduate department adviser is available to assist students in program planning each semester and answer questions in time of need. Graduate students are assigned a graduate faculty adviser who will assist in planning their program of study.
A student's professional career at Northern begins with learning and improving skill performance in a variety of activities, including team/individual sports and fitness. Building on these basics, students begin the applied sciences sequence and take selected courses in the area of emphasis or in a minor.
