About Philosophy of Education

The reason this webpage is possible is due to the generosity of two one-of-a-kinds, Jim and Helen Merritt. Jim Merritt came to NIU in 1948 and served on the Faculty of the College of Education as a Professor of Philosophy of Education until his retirement in 1979. Helen Merritt was a member of the Art Department and later School of Art from 1962 until her retirement in 1990.

Still active in their retirement, Jim and Helen Merritt donated significant monies to establish a Philosophy of Education Fund in the hope that education at NIU would continue to include a proper commitment to Philosophy of Education. The purpose of the fund is “to foster in the minds of students better knowledge of philosophy of education and how this area of inquiry functions in providing better education.”

This webpage is designed to honor the commitment and work of Jim Merritt.
