The issue of educating for ecological and cultural sustainability is bringing people to the table from many places—places defined by geography, race, class, gender, and discipline. Education for sustainability (EFS) is gaining ground in the education discourse. This term is used to describe the education, training, and public awareness needed to support a world view of sustainability. This world view has a history and philosophy, like those that came before, e.g. manifest destiny, conservation, globalization, and social justice, among others. These world views guide policy making, research and practice in all contexts, including education. This web site is one small effort by the Foundations of Education faculty to encourage a consideration of Education for Sustainability discourse at NIU and beyond. The sustainability world view is becoming a foundation of educational effort at all levels and in diverse contexts. A sustainability across the curriculum Workshop, modeled after the piedmont project is being planned for 2008.
