The Literacy Clinic provides two primary services: diagnostic assessment and tutoring. These services are also available in conjunction with the NIU education centers in Hoffman Estates, Naperville, and Rockford. A $60 fee is charged for diagnostic assessment, and a fee of $90 is charged for tutoring. Any student who qualifies for the free or reduced school lunch program is charged a fee of 50% of the above costs for each service. In addition, scholarships are available based on need.
Our thorough diagnostic evaluation of a student's reading ability determines reading potential and present reading achievement. Within a few weeks after the assessment is completed, a report is sent to the parents and to the referring agency (if parental permission is given). The report includes the names of the assessment instruments, results of the student's performance on these assessment instruments, an analysis of the student's reading, and recommendations for improving reading.
Tutoring provides individual or small group instruction designed to meet the needs of the learners. Sessions are scheduled on a semester basis. During spring and fall, tutoring sessions typically meet 1-2 times per week. Summer tutoring is a six-week program that meets typically four days per week.
