New this spring to the Literacy Clinic is the Reading Individualized Tutoring Services (RITS) Program. This program offers students in grades 1 – 8 an individualized tutoring program to strengthen each child’s reading. Tutoring is provided in the areas of phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, and study strategies and customized to each individual child. The emphasis of all tutoring is on helping the student learn useful reading strategies and apply them to real-life reading tasks and materials.

Tutoring is provided by an experienced, certified reading specialist with a Master’s or Doctoral Degree in Reading. All tutoring sessions are held in the NIU Literacy Clinic in DeKalb.

Sessions will be scheduled to match the availability of the student and the Reading Specialist. During the school year, sessions are scheduled for after-school hours or the early evening. Summer sessions take place in the morning or early afternoon. Saturday session may be available upon request.
