Welcome
to Project QUILL.
The Department of Literacy Education at Northern Illinois University
offers Project QUality Instruction for Language Learners, a project focused on increasing the number and improving the quality of teachers who serve English language learners in Northern Illinois. The grant supports teachers with tuition and classes at Northern Illinois University.
Its purpose is to:
Enable bilingual teachers with Transitional Bilingual Certificates (Type 29) to complete (or make substantial progress toward) the requirements for Illinois Elementary Teacher Certification (Type 03) and the 18 hours of coursework leading to the ESL/Bilingual Approval. Our Project QUILL Grant will finish in 2007. We will not be starting a new Type 29 Master's Cohort nor will we be accepting any more students into our current cohorts.
Enable mainstream teachers who have English language learners in their classroom to complete the 18 hours coursework leading to either ESL or Bilingual approval including training and/or coursework in literacy instruction for ELLs. Project QUILL is currently recruiting 30 full-time teachers (who have English language learners in their classroom) for an ESL/Bilingual cohort that will begin in Spring 2007. Teachers will take the six courses leading to the State of Illinois' ESL and/or Bilingual Approval/Endorsement. Courses will be offered in the Lake County area (exact location to be announced later). For more details, go to the FAQ page. To apply, go to the Application page to download an application and reference form.
Project
QUILL will also assist rural school districts as well as NIU faculty, field
supervisors, and cooperating teachers.
It
will:
Offer workshops for and consult with selected rural school district administrators to increase their capacity to serve their emergent English language learner population.
Provide training to NIU faculty, field supervisors, and cooperating teachers on how to incorporate effective practices for teaching English language learners into the teacher training program and their preservice teacher mentoring.
