A chronology of key events around a particular topic within a given historical period is often called a historical timeline. A well-developed historical timeline helps a researcher put people and events under investigation into perspective. Therefore, it is essential that a researcher be familiar with the chronology of events as well as the evolution of the body of knowledge related to his/her research topic in order to have a solid foundation in approaching the study.
