Observation

Observation is a data elicitation technique commonly used in field researches to obtain information about an object or phenomenon in its natural, or controlled, setting. It involves systemically selecting, watching, and recording behavior or characteristics of the object or phenomena under investigation. Based on the role of the observer, observation can be categorized into participatory observation and non-participatory observation. In participatory observation, the observer becomes, or is, part of the group that is being investigated. In non-participatory observation, on the other hand, the observer does not question, communicate, interact with the group, or interfere with the phenomena, under investigation. Depending on the research questions or purpose of the study, observations can be a useful method in gathering data.
