Catalog Description
Methodology is related to practice through a minimum of 48 clock hours per credit hour of professional laboratory experiences in the elementary school classroom and through an outdoor education experience. S/U grading basis is used.
Course Overview
The commitment to NIU's Department of Teacher Education is to the preparation of classroom teachers for public and private school. The Department has a strong tradition of providing in-service (clinical) training to sophomore, junior and senior student teachers. The effectiveness of this CIEE 383 professional preparation program relies upon the interactive work of the university supervisor and the student teacher with the cooperating teacher in the field setting. This experience has, as its major purpose, to give student teachers an opportunity to develop educational strategies and methods in direct contact with elementary students under the guidance of the cooperating teacher and the university supervisor. The articulation of CIEE 383's objectives and illustrative course activities should be tailored to meet the individual needs of the student teacher while enhancing the teaching-learning context of the cooperating teacher's classroom.

Three factors differentiate this experience from other clinical experiences:

  • The clinical supervision of student teachres is carried out by the cooperating teacher rather than the university supervisor. The cooperating teachers participated in graduate coursework during the summer in preparation for your arrival. The university supervisor operates as more of a coordinator during this process.
  • There is a special focus on the development of effective science instruction as a part of this experience. In most cases, you will team teach an inquiry-based science unit with your cooperating teacher.
  • You will take part in a three-part seminar designed to offer training in outdoor education/community resources communication.
Course Objectives
The following represent the essential course objectives
  • To give student teachers the opportunity to start developing their own educational philosophy and teaching style.
  • To give student teachers the opportunity to put into practice the ideas and teaching suggestions presented within their methods courses.
  • To give student teachers an opportunity to understand the duties, responsibilities, roles, and management functions of an elementary teacher.
  • To provide opportunities for the student teacher to plan and organize instruction for school children.
  • To help student teachers increase their understanding of children and how they learn within the school setting.
  • Develop skills to support using resources beyond the classroom in support of instruction.

Representative Course Activities
During this time, each student will do the following:
  • Attend all the in-class administrative/organizational sessions that are scheduled by the university supervisor and cooperating teacher. Plan early in the semester to avoid conflicts.
  • Each student is required to spend three weeks of full days in the assigned classroom; total hours vary from school to school, but are reported on the Early Clinical Experience evaluation form.
  • Each student is required to participate in the three-day outdoor education seminar.
  • Sign the final evaluation form; also fill out the clinical description at the top of the form.
  • Turn in an interview of classroom procedures to the university supervisor on the first Wednesday of the clinical experience.
  • Turn in a self-evaluation via electronic mail to the university supervisor every Friday during the clinical experience.
  • Turn in a lesson plan to your supervisor for each observation done by him. It must be approved by the cooperating teacher one day prior to the observation.
Evaluation
In order to receive a grade of satisfactory for the course, the student must receive a satisfactory evaluation from both the cooperating teacher and the university supervisor. The university supervisor is required to file a Teacher Education Deficiency form when a student received a poor rating from the cooperating teacher and/or an unsatisfactory grade from the university supervisor. This form is filed with the Office of Clinical Education and Student Services, and may result in a staffing to consider whether the student should continue in teacher education.
Important Information

  1. If for any reason you must miss a day of school, this time must be made up. Make arrangements with your cooperating teacher for this make-up time and inform the university supervisor of the arrangements that have been made.
  2. If you must be absent from your classroom, you are responsible for calling your cooperating teacher and your university supervisor.
  3. If you must be absent from class at the university, call your university supervisor prior to class to make arrangements to get the missed work. This may take place under only the most dire of emergency situations.
  4. Missing a school placement day without prior permission/notification will result in a staffing on the grounds of unprofessional behavior.
  5. An "unsatisfactory" evaluation from either the cooperating teacher or your university supervisor will require a staffing.
