Welcome to Library Information Specialist (LIS)!

The are of Library Information, formerly known as School Library Media has undergone tremendous growth over the past few decades. The use of computers and the Internet, particularly the World Wide Web, for information management and access has required library professionals to be skilled in not only the Library Sciences, but also Information Technology. Another effect is that educational institutions across the nation are establishing standards for information literacy to provide guidelines for educators faced with instructing learners of all ages to use information ethically and effectively.

School library professionals find excellent preparation for their profession through the field of Instructional Technology, where an emphasis on learning and instruction is woven into their studies. The ETRA department at NIU currently offers a program leading to certification as a Library Information Specialist. To help you to begin exploring this exciting area, below are a chapter summary (submitted by an NIU doc student, of course!) from Jonassen's Handbook of Research on Educational Communications and Technology, 1st Ed. and a few online resources. You'll need Adobe Acrobat Reader to access the summary. Keep checking back for updates!
