CATALOG DESCRIPTION
Participation and observation in
early childhood settings for a minimum of 60 clock hours. May be
repeated for a maximum of four semester hours. S/U grading.
COURSE OBJECTIVES
The main purpose of this experience
is to give students an opportunity to have direct contact with children,
under the guidance of a cooperating teacher and university supervisor,
so they can:
1. Increase their understanding of child development and how children learn.
2. Become more aware of the teacher’s responsibility regarding special needs children and multicultural education.
3. Experience a variety of guidance and classroom management situations.
4. Conduct small and large group activities in the classroom in a variety of content areas.
5. Begin to develop their own teaching style.
6. Plan and organize instruction and routine activities appropriate for young children.
7. Become familiar with school policies, procedures, and professional responsibilities.
8. Integrate classroom learning, methods, and theory into an actual classroom situation.
COURSE REQUIREMENTS
1. Attendance at group orientation
meeting and group closing meeting (mandatory).
2. A weekly journal is due by 3:30 on Monday of each week. Turn in your journal to the secretary in GA 162. Include in your journal observations of the children, your cooperating teacher, the classroom, and the school. Also include feelings of success and frustrations.
3. A binder will be required to organize your assignments and collections of materials.
4. Written assignments linked to each of the core competencies to be developed in the 382 experience will be required. These include: observing, participating, planning, and evaluating. These assignments should be placed in your binder. Each assignment should be clearly labeled. A grade of “S” will not be given unless this work is complete and of high quality.
5. Weekly evaluation forms will be completed by the cooperating teacher; visitation reports will be completed by the university supervisor. The final evaluation form must be completed and signed by the student, cooperating teacher, and university supervisor, and returned to the university supervisor by the time of the group closing meeting.
STUDENT GUIDELINES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Complete your Student Teacher
Information Sheet and submit a copy to your university supervisor during
the week before you begin your clinical experience.
2. Contact and visit the school the week before you begin your clinical experience. Submit a copy of your Student Teacher Information Sheet to your cooperating teacher.
3. Report to your assigned classroom on the assigned dates. The 382 experience lasts eight weeks. Six weeks are spent in a primary classroom; two weeks are spent in a kindergarten classroom.
4. If you will be late or absent, you must call the school, your university supervisor, and a student in your 382 group. Make up time is required for lateness or absences.
5. Dress and conduct must be professional. When in doubt, consult with your cooperating teacher or your university supervisor. In general, err on the side of caution.
6. Respect the program and the teachers with whom you work.
7. Maintain confidentiality.
8. Make the most of this experience! Try new things, enjoy the children, and get to know other teachers.
9. Schedule regular discussion times with your cooperating teacher. Encourage open communication.
10. Meet with your university supervisor as scheduled.
11. Send a written thank you note to the site upon completion of your 382 experience.
12. Complete the requirements described herein or assigned by your university supervisor.
