Research Interests

  • Upper elementary and middle school students’ engagement in literacy learning, particularly English Learners’ and struggling readers’ engagement in reading
  • The development of observational measures that capture the multidimensional nature of engagement using exploratory methods
  • Experiential and cognitive factors that impact ELs’ and struggling readers’ reading comprehension
  • The impact of facilitating a classroom-community connection for students from diverse backgrounds as it relates to their engagement and use of reading comprehension strategies
