Boys and Books
The Jerry L. Johns Literacy Clinic offers a program aimed at improving the reading and learning potential of intermediate-school age boys in the DeKalb and Sycamore area. This program involves weekly meetings of groups of boys, along with NIU affiliated instructors, in a “book club” type setting; where boys learn to read and interact with a particular book during weekly sessions, while using multiple formats, (print, electronic, aural, visual, etc.); environments (classroom, recreational, instructive, and collaborative settings); as well as additional participants, (academic, professional, and community). The goal of the program is to improve the boys’ literacy in ways that will positively influence multiple facets of their academic, professional, and social lives.
