Valerie Sawyer is the clinical placement coordinator for SEED and has Masters and Bachelors’ degrees from Northern Illinois University in special/elementary education and instructional technology, respectively. Prior to working at NIU, Valerie taught high school special education and worked as a qualitative research associate at Educational Research and Services Center.  She also worked as an instructional design consultant for corporate clients such as Arthur Andersen and Ameritech.

Valerie has been an instructor at NIU since 2002 and the SEED clinical placement coordinator since 2014. As an instructor, she taught undergraduate courses and supervised both early clinical and student teaching candidates.  In her current position, Valerie makes approximately 400 early clinical and student teaching placements for both the Early Childhood and Special Education programs each year.  In addition to collaborating with numerous urban, suburban, and rural districts contained within NIU’s 60-mile radius service region, Valerie also facilitates the placement process for those candidates interested in student teaching with NIU’s partners in other states and countries.
