Currently, there are approximately 50 students fully admitted to the sport management program with another 15+ students enrolled in the program as a student-at-large. In addition, several students from other disciplines take sport management courses as electives.
An application for admission to the Graduate School form must be submitted directly to the Graduate School. Applicants must also supply two letters of recommendation and GRE scores to complete the application.
To be eligible for admission to the Graduate School at NIU and the Sport Management Program, a student must meet the following criteria:
A student who does not meet the admission requirements may be admitted on the basis of evidence of compensating abilities as determined by the department and the Graduate School. Typically, a student must complete a minimum of 9 credits hours as a student-at-large (SAL), but no more than 15 credit hours of SAL, while maintaining a maintaining a 3.25 or higher GPA, at which time a student may reapply for admission to the program. If the SAL earned GPA is a 3.25 or higher, then a student is normally recommended for admission to the program.
Yes, all students are required to complete an internship. The internship is the culminating course taken in obtaining the M.S. in Sport Management degree. The internship is a full-time management experience in a sport management setting. The minimum time requirement is 400 hours.
Internships are completed off-campus with a sport-related organization. Students have completed internships with various professional sport organizations, semi-professional sport organizations, intercollegiate athletic departments and private corporations within the northern Illinois region and the United States.
Sport management classes (LESM) are offered at the NIU main campus in DeKalb. However, typically one LESM course is offered off-campus each year at one of the NIU off-campus sites in Naperville or Hoffman Estates. The College of Business does not offer any graduate courses on campus. Business courses are offered at the NIU off-campus sites in Naperville or Hoffman Estates on a regular basis.
Sport management classes (LESM) are offered Monday through Thursday evenings. LESM classes are scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. and end at 9:10 p.m. Business courses are offered Monday through Thursday evenings, with some classes offered on Saturday mornings.
No. While many of the courses in the Sport Management program contain an online component, no classes are completely online.
